Since 2003, Cambridge opticians, Taank Optometrists, has become synonymous with outstanding eyecare, from regular checks to glaucoma outpatient treatment.  Taank is also renowned for its beautiful frames handpicked from the world’s best design houses. It’s the reason we’ve won national awards. While the recognition is lovely, our focus remains resolutely on you and doing everything possible to ensure you leave happy, seeing clearly and looking amazing.

Taank is proud to continue a tradition of excellence in eye care that spans more than a century—one that began when optician Henry Flanders set up his practice at 92a Mill Road in 1913.

 
Around the world, too many people are denied access to quality eyecare, even when 75% of sight loss is preventable. Sight-impaired people are living in fear of stigma and discrimination, their lives and those of their families blighted and unfulfilled. Cambridge opticians, Taank, supports charities that are working hard to transform lives and raise awareness of these issues.

Giving Back

As proud members of the vibrant Mill Road community, we know that when we come together we can make a real difference. That’s why we make it a priority to give back and support various eyesight charities throughout the year, be it through regular donations or fundraising events during the annual Mill Road Winter Fair.

In 2021, the Taank practice was expanded and refurbished to deliver a world-class optometry experience in the heart of Cambridge. The inviting space now comprises two consulting rooms, reception, snug, a styling area with beautifully displayed eyewear, and a (much-loved) full-service coffee bar. We invite you to look around.

From the beginning, our vision was to create a functional design—a mix of social and private areas—that delivered masses of visual impact. Colours were selected to be calming and convey a friendly warmth, further complemented by grained wood, marble countertops, and flashes of polished brass.

An optometry practice has existed on this site for more than a century, so were careful to preserve and restore period features, like the fireplace, that reflect the property’s age.

From the outset, we wanted to stretch ourselves to make sustainable design choices that benefited our clients, community, and the next generation. As such, we removed the gas supply, added eco-friendly insulation, beautiful, sustainable lighting by Tala, energy-efficient windows, and plenty of natural ventilation.

A visually pleasing space is one thing, but it’s the subtle details like lighting and sound that really create atmosphere and make for a relaxing environment. We hired an acoustician to install a sound system to pipe music throughout the practice and ensure that our consulting rooms are confidential. 

During COVID-19, we met the highest recommended regulations to ensure your safety and comfort during eye exams. Hopefully we won’t have to live through a repeat experience, but one of the great things about this design is its adaptability, which provides plenty of space should we ever need to socially distance again. A fresh air exchange improved airflow throughout and easy-to-disinfect surfaces and antimicrobial fabrics keep things sparkling clean.
